We have several tampers, they all do the job. We do use different tampers or bases depending on the profile or machine we use.
The tamper we are using for our daily coffee described here, is “The Force Tamper” with a 58.35 flat smooth base.
We find if the base it too closely fitting, it can cause suction to loosen the puck when removing the tamper, leading to significant channeling. This was common when using the 58.5mm bases, we find the 58.35mm is much better.
We recommend self leveling tampers only, if it is also tamps at constant pressure, even better.
